Climbing shoe is one kind of sports shoes, which is specifical designed and manufactured for climbing and travel. It is very suitable for outdoor sports. A climbing shoe is a specialized type of footwear designed for rock climbing. Typical climbing shoes have a close fit, little if any padding, and a smooth, sticky rubber sole with an extended rubber rand. Unsuited to walking and hiking, climbing shoes are typically donned at the base of a climb.
Early rock climbers used heavy-soled mountaineering boots. Modern climbing shoes use carefully crafted multi-piece patterns to conform very closely to the wearer’s feet. Leather is the most common upper material, with other materials such as fabric and synthetic leather also employed. The climbing rubber used for soles was developed specifically for rock-climbing. Climbing shoes manufactured with a downward pointing toe box increase the ability to stand on small holds and pockets at the expense of both comfort and the ability to smear. Approach shoes are hybrids between light-weight hiking shoes and climbing shoes offering some of the qualities of each.
Climbing shoes fit very closely to support the foot and allow the climber to use small footholds effectively. Most climbers forgo socks in order to achieve a more precise fit. As a result of their tightness, most climbing shoes, particularly the more aggressive or technical styles, are uncomfortable when properly fitted.
‘The Freedom of the Hills’ is often considered the standard textbook for mountaineering and climbing. The book was first published in 1960 by The Mountaineers of Seattle, Washington. The book was written by a team of over 40 experts in the field and is suitable reading for all mountaineers, from beginners to experts. The title of the book is a reference to the ancient medieval European tradition of “Freedom of the City”, that conferred upon the recipient access to a city. The reference implies that with the knowledge in the book, a certain equivalent freedom of the wild mountains can be attained.
The book grew out of the annual climbing course run since 1935 by the Mountaineers, for which the reading material was originally a combination of European works and lecturers’ mimeo outlines. These were assembled into the Climber’s Notebook and published by the Mountaineers as the hardbound Mountaineers Handbook in 1948. By 1955 the rapid postwar evolution of climbing techniques and tools had made the Handbook out of date, and the effort was begun to produce Freedom of the Hills. Nearly 80 major contributors are credited in the first edition and were organized by a committee of 8 editors.
Climbing shoes divides into mountaineering shoes and rock climbing shoes. And the two kinds of climbing shoes subdivide into more kinds of shoes too. For example, the mountaineering shoes divide into four main type, those are lightweight rural mountain climbing shoes, hiking shoes or general mountaineering shoes, heavy mountaineering shoes and military mountaineering shoes. Sometimes we call mountaineering shoes as mountaineering boots. It is not cheap for a pair of good quality mountaineering shoes.
